One of my crazy adventures is the Battambang’s bamboo train ride on its old and abandoned railway outside its city proper.
It was a simply 45 minute ride or shall I say, a crazy ride. Well, it was nothing but a ride along the abandoned railway, a short glimpse of a vast ricefields along the way and the end part is a small community of Cambodian locals, a small local store with souvenir stuff and kids making you a bracelet made of coconut leaf.
It was 12th of July and I can still feel the sun touches my skin. The Cambodian dust still fills in my pores. Oh, I like to reminisce each bit of memories. I can still recall riding a “tuktuk”. So for that day, we have decided to pamper ourselves with a bit of a tourist and probably to have a decent dinner later on?
Around 9 in the morning we hired a tuktuk. It took us about few minutes to reach the railway. Once you arrive on the place, you’ll be automatically offered by some Cambodian guys a ride. As fast as a blink of an eye, almost a 12 dollar for this ride you have to pay. A photo taken and the fun would start.
It was a noisy ride and a little shaky. It has a small engine like of an engine of a small fishing boat. The 2 iron wheels on both sides are movable. Movable because you need to get up and give way for the ones who are coming. There was only one way…
The ride was crazy though, for those who are aiming an experience, it’s a must try. I couldn’t count how many times did we stop and how many times our “driver” took his wheels and the bamboo train out of the way. It was a couple of times. It’s crazy and fun to watch them do it.
At the dead end, I was expecting something. I mean, maybe there is something waiting, or perhaps a surprise? The kids welcomed us with their big smiles and they were making some “jewelries” made up of coconut leaf. The “green grasshoper” made up of leaf also was amazing. They are going to offer them to you. They are so bubbly and entertaining.
Aside from a drink of coca cola, a glance of the surrounding. I thought of our couple of dollars were finished and head back to the station again. I think the mainpoint of riding this bamboo train is to show how unique it was for the eyes of foreign people. They have made something different and fun out of the ‘abandoned’ railway. In a sense, it gave an income for locals there.
